Did You Know?

W. T. Copeland was a British businessman and politician who served as Lord Mayor of London and a Member of Parliament.

Description

Pate sur pate or 'paste on paste' is a decorative technique for porcelain that involves painting primarily white clay slips on a dark background. After each layer has dried, successive layers are applied before being scraped and carved back to form the decoration in low relief.
A circular porcelain plate features a central scene of a gold bird on a branch against a dark, gold-flecked background. White and gold leaves sprout from nearby branches. A wide border circles the scene with a repeating pattern of interlocking gold zigzags on a dark blue field, forming diamond shapes that each contain a small gold flower. A thin gold-lined rim edges the vessel.
