Did You Know?

Fortuna, mentioned on this plaquette's inscription, is the Roman goddess of luck.

Description

The inscription DUBIA FORTUNA is generally translated as "doubtful fortune," and speaks to the vagaries of war.
A brown bronze circular sculpture depicts a helmeted warrior on a horse rearing toward the right. Holding a shield, the rider leans forward as the horse leaps over a fallen figure lying on the ground. Curved uppercase letters line the top edge, which is pierced by a small hole. High relief emphasizes the horse's dynamic mane and muscular forms, with lighter bronze highlights across the raised surfaces.
