Did You Know?

This vessel was intended for ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrangement.

Description

Kohyama Yasuhisa is known for his exploration of natural forms. This piece is part of a series examining wind, which he began in the 1980s.
A horizontal stoneware vessel forms an elongated trough with an irregular, sloping rim that rises at both ends. Deep, sharp ridges slash diagonally across the right side, while the left edge appears jagged and broken. Its coarse surface transitions between muted tan and light orange, mottled with dark reddish patches. Small white grains are embedded throughout the clay, adding a gritty texture that accents the earthen form.
