Description

In 1914, Sommer moved to the rural Brandywine, located halfway between Cleveland and Akron, where he converted an abandoned schoolhouse into a studio that became an important meeting place for modern artists, poets, and musicians. Seeking freedom from convention by immersing himself in nature, Sommer explained, "I believe art should be as spontaneous as the song of a bird."
Watercolor and ink on vertically oriented paper depict two tulips amidst sweeping, abstract shapes. A tall tulip with red and yellow petals dominates the center, while a shorter one curves from the left. A translucent blue arc sweeps across the top, framing orange and yellow washes suggestive of hills. Thin, jagged ink lines define the forms, anchored by a dark brown patch in the lower-left corner against a pale, multi-toned background.
