Description

Smoke has been a recurring motif in Pae White’s work, and she has been exploring ways to capture its genuine qualities in various media. This monumental tapestry transforms the elusive motif into a physical image as if the clouds of smoke have been caught in the digitally woven structure. What White describes as the cotton’s "dream of becoming something other than itself" is a sensual play of questioning boundaries between different media, between the applied and fine arts, and between different physical conditions.
A horizontally long, woven textile of white cotton and polyester contrasts with a solid black background. Swirling white and cream wisps form distinct loops and ribbons on the left, curving upward in overlapping layers. To the right, the patterns become dense and tangled, creating a hazy, translucent mass. Sharp, curving lines crisscross the surface, revealing subtle hints of pale pink and iridescent tones within the flowing, smoke-like composition.
