Did You Know?

Litters were a mode of transportation reserved for people of high social status.

Description

The sculptural scene atop this vessel's chamber depicts four porters who carry a dignitary in a litter, a high-status mode of transport. Reportedly found at Wari Wilka, a highland water shrine, the vessel empties via a long channel that passes through the body of the dignitary.
A reddish-brown ceramic vessel depicts a large figure seated atop a platform supported by four smaller figures. The central figure wears a tiered headdress and has black swirling patterns on their cheeks. Below, four supporting figures with cream-painted faces carry the platform on their shoulders, wearing dark boots. The vessel tapers into a flared base decorated with a small, red and cream floral motif.
