To supplement his income as a painter, Jan Wijnants also owned an inn.

Description

Dune landscapes were a subject of great interest in seventeenth-century Netherlands, among the earliest subjects for independent landscape. They were the bread-and-butter speciality for Wijnants, whose far more unusual Amsterdam canal scene is also in the collection of the CMA.
A horizontally oriented oil painting depicts a landscape under a pale blue sky with gray and white clouds. On the right, a sun-drenched, sand colored embankment rises toward muted green trees and broken fences. At its base, two men with light skin tones rest with three dogs; one stands in a dark coat holding a rifle, while the other sits in red. A dark, wet path reflects light in the foreground.
