Description

The shepherd and shepherdess gaze up toward a pair of angels who are announcing that Christ has been born. A dog is curled at their feet while sheep graze around them. This anonymous painter had a highly personal style recognized by its facial types, architectural forms, and a love of sumptuous textile patterns. He has been associated with other books of hours that were produced in and for the city of Troyes in France.
A vertically oriented tempera painting depicts a man in a pink tunic leaning on a staff while a woman in a blue gown sits on a hill to the left. Black and white sheep graze in a green foreground near a sleeping dog. Behind them, brown hills rise toward a distant castle under a sky where two figures emerge from clouds. Below, Latin text begins with an ornate letter, framed by colorful, leafy vines.
