To Die Upon a Kiss is the dying line of Othello, the fictional African General in Shakespeare’s tragic play. The African American artist Fred Wilson (b. 1954) became interested in the history of Africans living in Venice when he was working in the Italian city preparing for the renowned Biennele exhibition. Wilson worked with master glass craftsman from the famed Murano glass factories to create this sculpture.
