Description

Bonebrake’s delightful personality and knowledge of printmaking led to friendships with many dealers. The Connoisseur was a present from Pamela Hatay Stratton, whose business specialized in the type of American and European prints of the 19th and early 20th century that Bonebrake adored. Many of his acquisitions were traditional small, black-and-white prints meant to be held and scrutinized. Carefully studying printed images is a favorite pastime of a connoisseur.
A vertically oriented wood engraving in black ink on cream paper depicts a man in profile from waist up, looking to our left. He wears a top hat, glasses, and ruffled scarf, holding a rectangular sheet with a silhouette portrait of a man in a hat. Fine black hatching and dense shadows cover his form, contrasting against the stark, light background. Below the central image, handwritten markings appear on the wide paper margin.
