Did You Know?

The marbling technique used to create this bowl imitates Persian marbled glass.

Description

This bowl was potted using the marbling technique called jiaotai (mixed clay), whereby light- and dark-colored clays are combined to create natural patterns, then covered with a transparent glaze. The marbling technique had been developed since the 8th century in imitation of the marbled glassware imported from Persia. Song marbled ware represented the continuation of the Tang tradition, achieving simplicity and vibrancy in aesthetic effects.
A stoneware vessel takes a rounded bowl shape, widening and rounding from a narrow circular base. A creamy white glaze is covered in a dense, dark brown marbled pattern. Repeating rows of overlapping U-shapes swish in wave-like bands across the interior and exterior, accentuating the vessel's curved form. The glossy finish catches the light, highlighting the feathered texture that ripples around the bowl and swirls toward the center.
