Did You Know?

The artist said that butterflies' "beautiful colors can fly in the mind of everybody, just like the unforgettable rainbow."

Description

Dance of Rainbow Light by Wen Lihua is composed of four panels representing the four seasons, each featuring two large butterflies embroidered in brilliant colors. Together they create the effect of a dazzling stained glass window. The artist created portions of the work with computerized sewing machine embroidery and then added hand embroidery to complete the butterflies, an unusual choice of combined techniques.
A horizontally oriented mercerized cotton textile is densely embroidered with overlapping butterfly wings in bright green, yellow, red, and touches of orange. Two radiating points anchor the composition, where linear stitching follows wing contours to create a ridged texture. Dark black and white patches provide contrast within the wings, which sweep toward the upper right and lower left. Vibrant green and yellow fill the background, creating a complex, textured arrangement.
