It took the artist one year to embroider the four panels that make up this artwork

Description

Dance of Rainbow Light by Wen Lihua is composed of four panels representing the four seasons, each featuring two large butterflies embroidered in brilliant colors. Together they create the effect of a dazzling stained glass window. The artist created portions of the work with computerized sewing machine embroidery and then added hand embroidery to complete the butterflies, an unusual choice of combined techniques.
A squared mercerized cotton embroidery features overlapping butterfly wings colored with combinations of vibrant red, lime green, and yellow. Radiating lines and black and white spots decorate wings splaying toward the edges. Patches of bright yellow and green textured stitches blend the wing tips into the background. Multi-directional stitching creates a saturated, kaleidoscopic effect throughout the square composition.
