Did You Know?

The artist said that she was inspired by colorful butterflies flying in the sunshine.

Description

Dance of Rainbow Light by Wen Lihua is composed of four panels representing the four seasons, each featuring two large butterflies embroidered in brilliant colors. Together they create the effect of a dazzling stained glass window. The artist created portions of the work with computerized sewing machine embroidery and then added hand embroidery to complete the butterflies, an unusual choice of combined techniques.
A horizontal mercerized cotton panel features two overlapping butterfly-like forms radiating from the center against a bright yellow and lime green background. Their wings are detailed with red, orange, and white stripes and punctuated by black, green, and purple spots. Densely stitched lines create a textured surface where the colorful forms intersect and blend, particularly toward the bottom center and right.
