Wen Lihua embroidered her name and the date on this panel.

Description

Dance of Rainbow Light by Wen Lihua is composed of four panels representing the four seasons, each featuring two large butterflies embroidered in brilliant colors. Together they create the effect of a dazzling stained glass window. The artist created portions of the work with computerized sewing machine embroidery and then added hand embroidery to complete the butterflies, an unusual choice of combined techniques.
An embroidered square depicts overlapping butterfly wings in bright red, purple, and blue threads. Dense stitching creates a layered texture with detailed patterns of spots and veins throughout. One wing set fans toward the top left, while others spread toward the right from a yellow center. A cursive black signature and the numbers 05 appear in the top right corner. A black frame surrounds the textile.
