Description

Harlem was a frequent subject for the documentary photographer Leonard Freed, who was interested in the experiences of Black Americans and especially the injustices highlighted by the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. He alluded to issues such as poverty and segregation in this photo by showing a group of children who look directly at the viewer, but who do so from a long and insurmountable distance through shards of shattered glass that suggest the building’s neglect.
