Did You Know?

Hewit may have learned about color woodblock prints through an exhibition of these works held at the Cleveland Museum of Art in 1920.

Description

This print was made using a technique called white-line woodcut, in which black outlines are replaced by un-inked areas where the paper’s tone shows through. Cleveland-based artist Mabel Hewit worked prolifically in this medium, using it to depict aspects of modern life. Here, men and women rush down a city street holding umbrellas to avoid rain—represented in the image through repeated diagonals.
