A native of Switzerland, Reto Thüring obtained a PhD from the University of Basel in 2011. He dedicated his dissertation to Venetian portraiture of the 16th century, and his doctoral work was supported by grants from the Voluntary Academic Society of Basel, Janggen-Poehn Foundation, Center for Venetian Studies, and Swiss National Science Foundation. He obtained his masters in art history in 2007. Since 2004, Thüring’s primary focus has been working with contemporary art and artists as a curator, editor, and art critic. Among his accomplishments, he is co-founder of the Association Kunstwollen and in this capacity he has been co-curator of Plattform, an annual exhibition series in Zurich dedicated to young Swiss artists. As a curator he has shown the works of more than one hundred artists since 2006. In 2008 he joined the exhibition committee of the Kunstraum Riehen where he curated the group exhibitions Tracing Reality (2009), Chasing Dreams (2010), and one-person exhibitions of the work of Emilie Ding, Karin Hueber, Boris Rebetez, and Bernhard Hegglin (2011 & 2012). He also curated a solo exhibition with works by Josse Bailly at LISTE – The Young Art Fair (2011), the group show Wall Floor Piece at the Von Bartha Garage (2011) and in 2012 he co-curated the group exhibition If I had eight hours to chop down a tree, I would spend six sharpening my axe at Kunstraum Riehen. He has been working as an art critic and chief editor of artcollector and has written texts for exhibition catalogues, newspapers and art magazines.
