Each year as the Lantern Festival Procession unfolds I stand in the crowd at the museum’s north door and share with those around me an anticipatory awe as we wait for the lighted dancers to emerge through the open doors into the darkened night.

This rare early bronze image of Vajrapani is now on view in gallery 237. Vajrapani means “he who holds (pani) the thunderbolt (vajra)” in Sanskrit.

Adopted by Buddhists as a protector, this sculpture visually conveys his power to overcome fear and obstacles to enlightenment.
