Celebrate the Newest Gallery Openings on Going Global Family Day, June 27
The entire community is invited to join in the celebration of the museum’s newest gallery openings with our Going Global Family Day on Sunday, June 27, from 12:30 to 4 p.m. The afternoon is filled with free activities, including opportunities to get up close and personal with works of art from our collections, hear stories inspired by the objects in the new galleries, and see mask-making demonstrations and performances featuring our visiting artists from Africa.
Participate in a Masked Ceremony
For those who may have missed our special guests from Boni, Burkina Faso, at this year’s Parade the Circle, or who would like the opportunity to see them again, La Troupe des Masques de Boni will be performing in the museum’s North Lobby beginning at 12:30 p.m. Joined by some of Cleveland’s own African dance and drumming specialists, they will also close out the family day at 3:15 p.m. with a traditional masked ceremony of the Bwa people, which will begin at the museum’s south door in the 1916 building and travel into the east wing’s KeyBank Lobby.
Art You Can Reach Out and Touch
The museum’s famous Art Cart also will make an appearance at our family day, featuring specially designated works from our Egyptian collection. Kids (and adults) can get up close and personal with these pieces, while learning more about ancient Egyptian art and culture. The Art Cart will be located in the Plain Dealer Lobby, just outside the new galleries, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
One-of-a-Kind Mask Demonstrations and Mask-Making Activities
If you’ve been inspired by our African collections and the masks of our Bwa performers, make sure to stop by the classroom level of the museum to make your own mask from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Timed tickets will be available the day of the event in the Education Lobby.
Additionally, master carver Yacouba Bonde from Burkina Faso will also be in the Education Lobby from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. demonstrating traditional methods for carving masks.
Storytelling, Tours, and Art in Motion
Myths and other tales inspired by the art in our ancient Greek and Roman collections will come to life in our Sensational Storytelling sessions from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. and again from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. All interested participants should meet in the Rotunda, and timed tickets are available there the day of the event.
Movement meets storytelling in our Art in Motion: Animals in Art activity. A dancer will lead groups through the galleries and teach them moves that mimic some of our most famous pieces, including Cranach’s Hunting near Hartenfels Castle. Activities take place from 1:00 to 1:45 p.m. or 2:00 to 2:45 p.m., with timed tickets available in the Rotunda.
