Chalk Festival To Showcase Mural Project
Be one of the first in Cleveland to get a sneak peek of large-scale mural draft designs this weekend at the 21st annual Chalk Festival. The museum has paired local artists with four neighborhood community groups to create murals for chosen public spaces. The artists and groups were asked to use the museum’s permanent collection as a source of inspiration and to contemplate the theme “A Sense of Place.” At this year’s Chalk Festival, the artists and community group members will chalk colorful, large-scale drafts, and visitors will get a first glimpse at the murals’ concepts and designs. Come see the mural imagery unfold as the artists and residents use the museum’s sidewalks around the lagoon as their canvas. Participating artists and communities include:
- Anna Arnold and Hough;
- Jerome White and Glenville;
- Neal Hamilton and Fairfax; and
- Ed Parker and East Cleveland.
The community mural project is a multi-phase effort in which the museum pairs professional artists with residential groups to design murals for four selected Cleveland neighborhoods. This project is part of the long-term Cleveland Foundation's Community of Relationships initiative, in which the museum engages the immediate neighborhoods surrounding the institution. The local artists and their corresponding communities will create and install the murals for neighborhood unveilings on November 6. Stay tuned to this blog for mural updates, installations, and celebrations. The 21st annual Chalk Festival takes place on Saturday, September 18, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday, September 19, from noon to 5:00 p.m. at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
