Textile Art Alliance Hosts Fashion Show and Boutique
Calling all fashionable Clevelanders! (I’m talking to you!) Do you want the chance to pick up hot, new clothing and accessories while supporting the museum? On October 17, the Textile Art Alliance (TAA), an affiliate group of the museum, will hold its seventh annual fashion show and boutique. This is a totally unique fashion event in Cleveland since the runway show features artist designed and hand-crafted wearable art for day and evening. Take a look below at an example of a one-of-a-kind garment you can purchase at the boutique, which includes more than 50 vendors. Another great feature of the fashion show and boutique is that all ticket sales benefit the museum’s textile collections. This item, one of last year’s additions to the permanent contemporary collection, was purchased with funds raised through the fashion show. This is a piece by the textile artist Lia Cook called Presence/Absence: Gatherthat was completed in 1998.
Presence/Absence: Gather, 1998. Lia Cook (American, b. 1942). Cotton, rayon, handwoven on computerized loom; 121.9 x 121.9 cm. Gift of the Textile Art Alliance 2009.340
It is a photographic weaving depicting an image of gathering arms and hands whose shape is echoed in the shimmering, gently draped cloth. The dramatic effect integrates the illusion of skin and fabric while simultaneously distorting and concealing the image. Presence/Absence: Gather is an excellent example of the creativity possible with avant-garde loom technology of the late 20th century. Gather a group of friends and come to this year’s fashion show and boutique. Fashion show tickets must be purchased by October 11. You will have the opportunity to meet the designers, talk trends, and purchase clothing and accessories to brighten your wardrobe and support the museum. The entire schedule features: 10:30 a.m. Boutique preview shopping for patrons of the fashion show. 1:00 p.m. Lunch, fashion show, and musical entertainment. 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Boutique and fashion show items will be for sale to the public. The event takes place at LaMalfa Conference Center, Holiday Inn Express Hotel and Suites, on 5783 Heisley Road in Mentor. Patron tickets are $45 and include the exclusive preview boutique shopping, fashion show, and luncheon. Seating is limited. For advance reservations, call the museum’s ticket center at 216-421-7350. Afternoon boutique shopping, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., is open to the public with a $5 entry fee at the door.
