Before you visit the museum take this online Curator's tour of the highlights of the Bergman Memorial Gallery. The gallery features some of the finest Early Christian and Byzantine works in existence today. Here you can get a look at the rare and spectacular Jonah marbles. These large Early Christian figures that tell the Old Testament story of Jonah and the Whale were supposedly found buried in a large pithos, or jar. Whether they were really found in a jar and where that jar might have been located remains a mystery. Take this opportunity to examine gold jewelry, an imperial gift from the time of Constantine the Great (AD 306-337), Byzantine mosaics of Adam and Eve, and the exquisite Icon of the Virgin tapestry.
These works represent the range of media and themes visitors will discover in the galleryevidence of a fascinating time and place where ancient and Classical styles and new Christian themes were melded together to stunning effect.
The Robert P. Bergman Memorial Gallery is named for Robert P. Bergman, the fifth director of the Cleveland Museum of Art. Because of his great love and scholarly interest in Early Christian and Byzantine Art, several of Dr. Bergman's favorite works are included in this highlights tour.
