Ingalls Library

The Cleveland Museum of Art's Ingalls Library, the fourth largest art museum library in the United States, is a non-circulating art reference library containing over 315,000 cataloged volumes. It's holdings include nearly 1,500 current periodical subscriptions and long runs of ceased periodicals as well as auction sales catalogues, dealer catalogues, microforms, electronic publications, CD-ROMs, clipping files and other research material.

An image library and a photograph collection complement the book and journal collections. The image library owns more than 460,00 slides which are available for loan as well as 600 videotapes which may be viewed in the library. Digital images are also being scanned and are available through the library's online catalog. Call 216-707-2544 for further information about the image library or to schedule an appointment.

In addition to the books, journals, slides and videotapes, more than 6,000,000 images are available in the library's photograph collection. Microfilm, microfiche and mounted photographs of works of art are available for use on the premises.

The library collects material on the visual arts including art, history, patronage, symbolism, iconography, and collectors and collecting. Its mission is to support research, documentation, and interpretation of the items in the museum's collections.

The online public access catalog contains bibliographic records for all books and journal titles (hard copy and electronic) owned by the library, as well as for clipping files. An index to selective museum publications is also maintained as a separate part of the catalog as are bibliographic records for the library's collection of art auction catalogues.
