Glossary

cosmetic scarification. The act or result of cutting or pricking the skin in a pattern, then rubbing in an irritant to raise permanent welts. The resulting skin texture is considered beautiful.

emotional proportion. Scaling body parts according to their perceived importance.

Epa festival. An annual Yoruba festival celebrating the contributions of different social roles to the common good.

frontality. Head and limbs are at rest, facing toward and visible from the front.

headdress. A covering for the head (as opposed to the face).

masquerade. Masked dance.

oba. Yoruba king.

sisal. A strong durable white fiber used especially for cord and twine.

terracotta. Fired clay (literally, baked earth).
