Perspective View of Interior of Nakamura Theater In this lively print, Masanobu has truly captured the spirit of theater life. The actor, Ichikawa Ebizo, is shown standing onstage within a small structure. He is sharpening the arrows that he will soon be using to defend his brother. In the audience vendors sell food, sake, and tea. Some people are intent upon the performance, while others are watching the crowd. The theater is several stories high, and the stage is built to resemble a Shinto shrine. The supporting musicians are seated at the back of the stage, and hanging from the ceiling are three rows of lanterns, each bearing an actor's crest. Masanobu was instrumental in popularizing the perspective print.Related Lesson Plans: Create a Family Crest Japanese Fans Theater in China and Japan a look at the Beijing Opera and the Kabuki Theater The Role of Japanese Women Page 18 of 589 | On the next page: Peasants in an Autumn Landscape |
