Lesson: Japanese Folktales: Animals and Demons

Lesson Plan (PDF file)

Images for Lesson (PDF file)

To help students realize that most cultures use an antagonist or evil being in art and
literature to tell stories, send messages, and teach lessons about life that also reinforce
that culture’s values. Sometimes animals are used as a trickster or represent malevolent
forces. The students will learn to distinguish between the antagonist and protagonist and
then to trace the connections to art.
