Lesson Plan (PDF file)

Images for Lesson (PDF file)

In China, calligraphy is known as one of the most highly valued art forms. Some suggest that it is on equal footing as painting. In his book, Voices of the Heart, Ed Young, noted childrens literature author, has taken the ancient art form and applied in such a way that it will connect elementary school children to Chinese culture as well as to enduring concepts such as love, happiness, and respect. With this lesson, students will gain a deeper understanding of calligraphy, its history and its techniques. They will also be able to draw, define, and write a short poem demonstrating an understanding of concepts that link Chinese and American cultures.
