Daoism, an ancient Chinese philosophical and religious system, dates to around 500 BCE. The classic Chinese Daoist text, Daodejing (Classic of The Way and Its Power) sets forth the tenets of the doctrine. It consists of 81 short reflections on the nature, origin, and purpose of human life. As a collection, the Daodejing has influenced Far Eastern philosophy, art, and literature for 2,000 years. Students will learn about Lao-tzu by studying the painting Master Lao-tzu Riding an Ox and by reading translations of his epic work, Daodejing. They will gain an appreciation of the challenges of translating poetry written in a character-based language.
