Lesson: One with Nature: Japanese Literature as a Mirror of Japanese art and Culture

Lesson Plan (PDF file)

Images for Lesson (PDF file)

This lesson was developed to show students the similarities in the appreciation of nature
between Japanese art and Romantic literature. A variety of sources will be analyzed in
order to explore the role of nature as a muse for both artists and writers. Students will
gain a unique perspective on nature, not only as a series of physical objects, but also as
the source of a powerful artistic and literary energy strong enough to evoke emotion,
love, and dedication from those who experience it.
