What

The museum is in the midst of a multi-year renovation and expansion of its facilities. This visitor-focused project will bring utility systems up to date, refurbish historic galleries, and increase the overall size of the museum to about 585,000 sq. ft., including approximately 35,000 sq. ft. more gallery space. The new museum will feature CMAs two architectural landmarks, the 1916 Beaux-Arts south building and the 1971 north building by Marcel Breuer, both of which are being completely renovated. Two additions, an east wing and a west wing, will flank the new facility, and a large courtyard with a soaring glass canopy will crown the center of the structure.

Why

Renovations and repairs to the existing buildings are critical to preserve our world-class art collection, and the museum needs more space for displaying works of art and presenting large traveling exhibitions. Visitor amenities will also be dramatically enhanced, with new restrooms, an expanded store and café, parking capacity increased to 625 spaces, and a magnificent 34,000 sq. ft. glass-covered courtyard, which will be the central point of orientation and the setting for events and public programs the year round.

When

We expect the entire project to be completed in 2011. The first galleries in the south building will open in summer 2008, featuring European and American paintings from the 16th through early 20th centuries. We look forward to the opening of the new east wing with its special exhibition galleries and the
later European and American galleries—including Impressionist and early modern paintings, decorative art and design, and contemporary art—by late 2008. Galleries of ancient Mediterranean through Renaissance
art should be next, opening by late 2009.

As this work proceeds, exhibitions and events continue at the museum, and masterworks from our permanent collection are receiving international acclaim as they tour the world in a series of traveling shows.
