| Conservation |  | Chief Conservator
Summary: The Chief Conservator of the Cleveland Museum of Art has primary responsibility for the conservation of objects in the Museum’s collection and for overseeing all aspects of a major conservation program that comprises a range of related activities: the treatment of objects, technical analysis, scientific research, collaborative work with other institutions, and the training of conservators. As a senior manager within the institution, the Chief Conservator oversees the operations of the conservation department, which is staffed by six conservators, three conservation technicians, and several interns and fellows, and works in close cooperation with the Director of Museum Services, to whom s/he reports, and the Chief Curator. S/he is also responsible for participating in institutional planning, setting and maintaining effective policies with respect to the care and treatment of the collection and loans as well as the operation of the museum’s facilities, the development of special initiatives, and representing the institution to a broad range of external constituencies¯including, most notably, the conservation profession¯ and upholding high ethical and professional standards in fulfillment of the mission of the Museum.
With a superb collection that is renowned for its scope and quality, the Cleveland Museum of Art is widely acknowledged as one of the finest museums in the United States. With an annual operating budget of $35 million, it is a leading cultural resource in Cleveland and northeast Ohio and a major center for art-historical research. It is presently in the midst of a seven-year, $258 million renovation and expansion project that will transform the institution and include state-of-the-art conservation spaces with laboratories for all specialties and areas dedicated for object preparation, photo-documentation and scientific analysis.
Position Responsibilities:
•Develops and monitors the implementation of annual and multi-year work plans in accordance with the Museum’s strategic plan; develops and manages operating, project and program budgets. Coordinates the activities of the conservation department with the work of other departments within the division of museum services and with other divisions in the Museum.
•Works closely with the Director of Museum Services and the Directors of Protection Services and Facilities Management to ensure that the Museum’s physical plant is managed in manner that provides for the safety and proper care of the collection. Participates in emergency and disaster planning and leads the conservation department’s efforts in response to an emergency or disaster.
•Reviews and approves proposed treatments to ensure that they will be effective and are consistent with the Museum’s responsibility to preserve the works of art in its care.
•Directs and monitors conservation treatments on objects in the Museum’s collection done by the museum’s own staff and, whenever appropriate, by contract conservators.
•Plans and coordinates, as needed, the scientific analysis of works of art in the collection or on loan by the museum’s conservators or by contract conservators or scientists.
•Working in consultation with the Director of Museum Services and the curatorial staff, plans and directs research on works of art in the collection.
•Plans and monitors the preparation of documentation related to the analysis and treatment of works of art in the collection.
•Participates, as needed, in the analysis and review of works of art being considered for acquisition.
•Develops and monitors the adherence to protocols for the handling, movement, storage, and utilization of materials and equipment in a manner that will protect the health and ensure of the safety of the Conservation Department staff and other CMA employees. Develops and monitors the implementation of a plan for monitoring on an ongoing basis the condition of works of art in storage and on public display.
•Works closely with the museum staff to develop plans for special exhibitions—both those organized by the Museum and by other institutions—that will guarantee the safety and proper care of the collection and works of art on loan from other institutions and individuals.
•Works closely and proactively on installations that will guarantee the safety and proper care of works of art displayed in the Museum’s galleries or on loan to other institutions.
•Serves the Museum’s key representative to the conservation profession.
•Upholds the professional standards and guidelines of practice of his/her field and always acts in a manner that is consistent with the best interests of the Museum and will protect and enhance its reputation and standing within the community of museums.
Qualifications: •B.A. from a four-year college or university with a major in Chemistry, Art History or a related major course of study.
•M.A. from an accredited conservation training program or equivalent training
•Ten years of direct hands-on experience encompassing all aspects of conservation, preferably in a museum setting
•Strong leadership, conceptual, and written and oral communication skills.
•Demonstrated ability to supervise as well as to work successfully with others – e.g. museum staff, volunteers, and diverse public constituencies in a large general art museum.
•Proven ability to handle a variety of tasks concurrently in a complex environment.

Summary: This full-time temporary position is available July 1 and can be renewed up to four years. Under the supervision of the Chief Conservator, this position will work in close collaboration with various departments and staff members (including the curatorial and conservation staff) to examine, document, and treat the Museum’s vast and diverse object-based collections.
In addition, the Objects Conservator works with the design and collection management departments to ensure proper handling, preparation, mounting and display of these collections. Duties will include overseeing as needed: collection photography for various purposes; packing art for transit; temporary and permanent installations. The position may also require couriering art to other institutions.
Qualifications: The successful candidate must have a Bachelor’s degree and has completed a graduate-level course of study in Conservation, or equivalent education and training, along with at least two years of experience working as an Object Conservator prior to application. The requirements of outstanding interpersonal, writing and organizational skills as well as the ability to work independently or in a team environment are essential. The applicant should have excellent hand skills and visual acuity and must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.

Summary: The Cleveland Museum of Art seeks candidates for Conservation Technician. This temporary position is available July 1 and can be renewed up to four years. Under the supervision of the museum’s Paper Conservator, the Conservation Technician will assist in the care of the Museum’s print and drawing collections. Collection care tasks will include the preparation of works of art on paper for storage, transit and display. As such, the candidate must have a background in matting and framing and working in the capacity of a preparator/technician for works of art on paper. The Conservation Technician will be expected to become fully conversant in preparing works of art on paper to the highest museum standards: specifically the hinging and mounting of works of art on paper using museum quality materials and methods.
The conservation technician will oversee as needed the handling of this collection including: installations; moving art for various purposes within the facility; maintaining prints and drawings storage; numbering works for registration purposes; monitoring light levels for display; packing for transit. Duties will also include assisting the paper conservator with incoming examinations and documentation reports and couriering works to other institutions as needed.
Qualifications: Qualifications: BA or equivalent degree; a firm background in matting and framing works on paper; museum experience preferred. The candidate must have excellent manual/fine-hand skills and should be prepared to show samples of her/his work. The candidate must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Summary: The Cleveland Museum of Art seeks nominations for the position of Chief Curator. As one of the museum’s senior officers, the Chief Curator has primary responsibility for the development, presentation, and interpretation of the Museum’s collection and is also expected to play a leading role in the development of exhibitions and programs.
The Chief Curator manages a staff of 35 in the museum’s curatorial division as well as the Exhibitions, Performing Arts, and Publications departments. As a member of the senior management team, the Chief Curator works collaboratively with the Director and the heads of the museum’s other divisions on strategic planning, the development and implementation of institutional policies, and special initiatives. The Chief Curator is also expected to play a leadership role in the field and represent the museum to a broad range of external constituencies.

The Cleveland Museum of Art is presently engaged in a seven-year renovation and expansion project designed by Rafael Viñoly that will increase the space available for the presentation of the collection by thirty percent and provide superb new facilities for conservation, education, and research.
Position Responsibilities:
Administrative
Manages the daily operations of the curatorial division, exhibitions, performing arts and publications departments. Develops and oversees the implementation of the annual and multi-year work plans in accordance with the museum’s strategic plan; develops and manages operating, project and program budgets. Coordinates the activities of the curatorial division and the exhibitions, performing arts, and publications departments with the work of other divisions within the museum.
Participates as a senior officer of the museum in the development and implementation of institutional strategic plans, long-range budgets, and other initiatives.
Curatorial
Working in close cooperation with the Director, oversees the accessions process and manages the development of the museum’s collection through gift and purchase.
Oversees the planning and implementation of the reinstallation and, in consultation with the Education Division, the interpretation of the museum’s collection.
Working in close cooperation with the Director, oversees the development and implementation of the museum’s special exhibitions program.
Oversees the development and implementation of the museum’s performing arts program and ensures that it fulfills the institution’s curatorial goals and supports its mission.
Directs research on the collection or on related topics in accordance with a plan developed in consultation with the Director and curatorial staff; ensures that this research is utilized for a variety of purposes― e.g., the development of exhibitions and public programming, the enrichment of the museum’s collection database and interpretive materials in the galleries, and for presentation in collections catalogues, scholarly articles, public lectures and symposia, etc.
Ensures that the museum’s curatorial staff works in close cooperation with the departments of conservation, collections management, and design and installation to ensure that the collection is properly documented, conserved when treatment is needed, stored in a safe and accessible manner, and effectively displayed in the museum’s galleries for the enjoyment and education of the public.
External Affairs
Works in cooperation with the Development Division to identify and secure the annual and long-term resources required to support exhibitions, programs, the development of the collection, scholarship, and other initiatives.
Serves as a representative of the museum in various professional organizations and events; maintains a strong and effective relationship with curators and scholars in the field, especially those at peer institutions in this country and abroad.

Summary: With minimal direction from the Senior Development Officer (SDO) of Individual Giving, this candidate develops cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies for the Donor Circles program. S/he will work closely with volunteers to recruit new donors, and upgrade existing donors as well as ensure the timely acknowledgment, tracking and reporting of individual gifts by the development services staff. The Assistant Director of Individual Giving will also conceptualize special events for various donor groups to increase their engagement and giving to the museum and will assist the SDO in fundraising for special exhibitions and programs. Other responsibilities include the development of materials, such as brochures, cards and newsletters, and the coordination of the Donor Circles program.

S/he is responsible for managing and coordinating the work of these departments, especially in support of the ongoing presentation and utilization of the collections and the Museum’s special exhibitions program. In this capacity, the Director of Museum Services prepares and manages the divisional budget, participates in institutional planning, assists with resource development, and represents the division in the development and implementation of special projects.

• Working in consultation with the Museum’s technology staff, plans and coordinates the development and maintenance of all computing resources (hardware and software) that are utilized for the management of the collections (i.e., the Museum’s collection of works of art and the holdings of the Ingalls Library) to ensure that they fulfill institutional objectives and are coordinated with related uses of computing (e.g., for marketing or interpretation) in the Museum.
• Works closely with the Directors of Protection Services and Facilities Management to ensure that the Museum’s physical plant is managed in manner that ensures the safety and proper care of the collections. Participates in emergency and disaster planning and leads the conservation department’s efforts in response to an emergency or disaster.
