Josep Llimona
Grief, 1907

Llimona was one of the founders of the Artistic Circle of St. Luke, an association of Catalan artists devoted to protecting morals in art. (Its most celebrated member was the architect Antoni Gaudí.) At first, the association forbade both the use of nude models and depictions of the nude. It abandoned the rule in 1900 so Catalan sculptors could be more competitive internationally.

This sculpture by Llimona was exhibited alongside works by Auguste Rodin and Constantin Meunier at the 1907 International Exposition of Fine Arts in Barcelona, where it won the Prize of Honor. Renowned for this representation of a mourning woman, Llimona became the citys leading funerary sculptor.
