Hi. My name is Marta Oriola and I am from Barcelona, Spain.
Currently, I am doing an internship in the Paintings Conservation Department at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Before coming to Cleveland, I completed a Fine Arts Degree at the University of Barcelona. Then, I went to England to do a Master of Arts on the Conservation of Paintings at the University of Northumbria at Newcastle.
The title of the painting that I am going to be restoring is A Bishop Saint with Donor. It is a "panel painting" which means that the paint has been applied on a wooden support.
The artist of the painting is not known, but its stylistic features situate the painting on the first half of the 15th century, in Spain. More precisely, the painting is thought to come from Catalonia, a region on the
north east of Spain, which is where I come from. This is why this project is even more interesting to me.
The structural condition of the painting is good. However, it has a layer of discolored varnish and old repainted areas that distort the legibility of the image.
The restoration process will involve the consolidation of flaking paint and the removal of the discolored varnish layer and the old repaints. After doing that, a new protective coating of varnish will be applied and losses will be infilled and retouched with reversible materials.
I hope you will make it a point to come back and follow the progress of this project at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
