At Work, August 1971 At Work, August 1971Oil on canvas The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Gift of Jacqueline Picasso in honor of the Museum's continuous commitment to Pablo Picasso's art, 1985 [Cat. no. 56] ©2001 Estate of Pablo Picasso/Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York This image of an artist with a palette but no brush is sometimes interpreted as a self-portrait. Painted by Picasso at the age of ninety, it retains the sense of physical force and intellectual intensity he had first achieved sixty-five years earlier in his Self-Portrait with Palette of 1906. The turbulent brushwork demonstrates that even at the end of his life Picasso was still confronting aesthetic challenges and finding new ways to portray the artist as a creative force.
