Art Conservation

The physical care of art objects is the responsibility of conservators, who are trained in art history, science, and studio art. The objects in the Antioch exhibition underwent study and treatment by conservators specializing in archaeological objects.

Art objects can deteriorate for a number of reasons including improper handling, poor storage, previous restoration, and exposure to fluctuating temperatures and relative humidity. Deterioration can also occur as a result of the inherent instability of the materials used by the artist. In the case of archaeological objects, a number of factors in the burial environment, such as the presence of ground water, can affect the state of preservation. In addition, damage can occur during excavation.
