Water At Antioch

...ships put to sea from all parts of the world, carrying goods from everywhere, from Libya, from Europe, from Asia...The best of what is best everywhere is brought here [to Antioch].

- Libanios, 4th-century Greek Orator

Antioch lies on the Orontes River, which flows into the Mediterranean Sea at Seleucia Pieria. The river was easily navigated by ships that carried cargo to and from the sea, fifteen miles down river.

Numerous healing springs could be found in Daphne, a suburb south of Antioch. The famed spa and sanctuary of Apollo were located near the source of these springs. Two Roman aqueducts carried the spring water into the city.
