This vase demonstrates how new professional opportunities for women grew out of the Arts and Crafts advocacy of design training. Sophie Newcomb College, the woman's college founded in 1886 at Tulane University in New Orleans, established an art pottery in 1895 as a “model industry.” Newcomb produced high-quality pottery and textiles and provided educated women with a means of supporting themselves.
