Breviary of John the Fearless, about 1413-19
In the lower margin beneath this miniature of the Ascension, a seated young woman holds the arms of John the Fearless and Margaret of Bavaria, which suggests that the manuscript was made either for the duke or for the duchess. The majority of the miniatures were painted by an unknown artist named after his work on this breviary. The Breviary Master worked with and was influenced by the celebrated Limbourg brothers. He is noted for his use of dazzling colors and his skill with gold, especially his burnishing, punching, and tooling of gilded areas. Other artists or their workshops who contributed miniatures to this breviary were the Egerton Master, Guillebert de Metz, and the Humilities Master.
