Kneeling Prophet, 1409

This figure and a corresponding statuette in the Louvre, Paris, have been identified as two of the original six supports from the now lost Reliquary of Saint -Germain formerly the prestigious treasure of the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Près. The reliquary with its supporting figures of prophets was created in Paris by the goldsmiths Jean de Clichy, Gauthier du Four, and Guillaume Boey, as evidenced by the surviving contract between these artists and the abbot of Saint-Germain Guillaume III. The statuettes reflect in small scale the expressive and voluminous style of Claus Sluter, sculptor to the ducal court of Philip the Bold at Dijon. The reliquary was removed from the abbey during the French Revolution and never seen again.
