A specialist in portraiture, Danloux was a master of the charcoal medium, which lends itself to manipulation with a stump (a tightly rolled piece of cloth or leather). By combining subtle stump work with darker lines applied directly with a charcoal stick, the artist achieved beautiful tonal range. The identity of the sitter in the present work is unknown. Danloux was working in Lyon in 1783 and 1784, and this sheet may depict a member of the aristocracy in that city, a young woman in her late teens or early twenties.
