Making a Case for Preservation

From the moment of creation, every work of art is vulnerable to change and deterioration. The very materials and techniques used by the artist can influence an artwork's durability or fragility. More importantly, the history of an object from the time it was made until it enters the stable environment of the museum can crucially determine its condition. Because artistic inspiration is expressed through form, surface, and color, any change in an object's appearance, no matter how small, can alter or even distort our visual sense and understanding of it. The look of a work of art profoundly affects its meaning.
