About Saint Peter Repentant

Artist Georges de La Tour painted Saint Peter Repentant in 1645. This is one of only two paintings both signed and dated by the artist himself.

Georges de La Tour was a gifted painter with an unusual painting style. He generally used only one or two thin paint layers to create his composition over the ground layer. The ground color varies in different areas from gray to brown in order to change the tonal effects seen through the translucent layers of oil paint.

The thickest applications of paint are in the areas of light highlights, such as in the glistening surfaces of the hands or eyes. Another main area of thick paint application is the flame in the lantern
