About the Frans Hals portrait (Repatriated Nazi Loot) The museum acquired this painting at a London auction in 1999. The painting had been recently returned to the heirs of Baron Alphonse von Rothschild after 52 years in the holdings of the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna. Confiscated from the Rothschild apartments in Vienna by the Third Reich during the Anschluss (the political union of Nazi Germany and Austria in 1938), the painting was hidden with other looted art treasures in a salt mine during World War II. After the war, the painting remained in the collections of the Austrian State museums until early 1999 when it was returned to the family along with other works of art from the same collection. They, in turn, decided to sell many of the works at auction.Page 1 of 3 | On the next page: The Roosterman Coat of Arms |
