How Light Can Damage Objects in Museums

Frequency and Duration

Some objects are displayed only for special exhibitions. Such exhibitions may be here at our museum or at another institution. A highly light-sensitive work, such as a watercolor or Japanese woodblock print, might only be shown for two months every five years.

Some objects are shown on a rotating basis. In the case of bound manuscripts the pages are periodically turned to a different image or illumination. This practice protects the individual illuminations from long term light exposure and allows the visitor to see more images.
