An Old Restoration

In a restoration treatment undertaken about 40 years ago, the area around the lantern flame was almost entirely overpainted by the restorer.

This was probably done to disguise a relatively small amount of old paint damage . Unfortunately, the early restorer chose to reconfigure the shape of the flame and thus visually dulled the intense light emanating from the lantern. The artist's original brushstrokes were covered by an extensive amount of added restoration. The restorer even took careful pains to paint in thin black cracks with a fine brush.
