About the Exhibition

The Frank Gehry-Peter B. Lewis Connection

Peter B. Lewis and Frank Gehry have a personal and professional relationship that dates back more than 15 years to when Lewis commissioned the architect to design his private residence in Lyndhurst (models for that project are currently on view at the Cleveland Center for Contemporary Art). Although the home was never completed, the "endless saga we've been through together," as Gehry characterized it, has finally been realized with this building at Case Western Reserve University.

Lewis did not insist upon Gehry for the project, but he endorsed the selection. The businessman believed Gehry could design a structure expressing his conviction that "business requires so much creativity and adjustments and a staid environment is the wrong place to learn those concepts." Gehry, for his part, feels buildings "are about optimism and belief that a building can be uplifting, have a spirit and create consensus."

How those pure ideals and strong beliefs found concrete expression is documented in the exhibition Challenging Structure: Frank Gehry's Peter B. Lewis Building.
