Lake Erie
Before this project, my knowledge of Cleveland was limited to an exit with an adjacent motel on the Ohio Turnpike. Three weeks or so of photographing the narrow strip of Cuyahoga County that gives on to Lake Erie hardly makes me an expert on Greater Cleveland, but I do have a sense now of what it's like to live with a Great Lake in the back yard: wonderful, but tricky. It's a pond one minute and an ocean the next, a friendly neighbor and a titanic adversary, an emptiness, a playground, a puzzle. Whatever the aspect, I've tried to provide clear witness to what I've found, to resonate well enough with the harmonics of the place that the tuning can be felt in the pictures.
About Frank Gohlke Born 1942, Wichita Falls, Texas
Lives in Southborough, Massachusetts Since the late 1960s, Frank Gohlke has relied on the American landscape for inspiration. Like many of his colleagues, he is not interested in recreating the majestic, unspoiled vista of an earlier time in the nation's history; instead, he records the land as it exists now, showing the intrusion of humanity into the natural environment. His broad, expansive views contain a profound sense of discovery and surprise.
