After the Bath (c. 1901), Mary Cassatt (American, 1844 - 1926)

With audacious compositions such as this one, Cassatt was able to transform and enliven the

genre of maternal imagery for which she had gained a reputation. After 1900, she showed an interest in grander effects in the handling of space and proportion, with more elaborate backgrounds. She also applied the color more freely to the paper or canvas she worked on.
