This groundbreaking exhibition is the first in the West to chronicle Japan's nearly 150-year history of photography. Some of the most significant images created in photography are Japanese, yet very few are known outside of Japan except the works of a few artists who established international reputations after World War II. The exhibition explores the evolution of Japanese photography, how its aesthetic shifts relate to the country's historical and cultural developments and its impact on photographers throughout the world.

One hundred and ten Japanese photographers are represented by more than 180 photographs, books, scrolls and albums drawn from public and private collections in Japan, the United States and Europe. Photographs range from 4 x 5 inches to 4 x 5 feet.
